The Zodiac Killer and the Collapse of 1960s Idealism

By: Charlie Julian

The Zodiac killer reflects broader historical themes such as the end of 1960s idealism and the shift in media from print to more sensationalized televised news. He also represents a shift toward more conservative ideals seen throughout the 1970s as a result of the environment of fear and chaos the Zodiac himself contributed to. Furthermore, the Zodiac remains a presence in the collective American psyche due to his media manipulation and his success as a criminal is due to lack of effective law enforcement processes as opposed to superior intellignece as suggested in his various letters.
